New Hobby
Woodwork
Since moving to South Africa I’ve picked up a new hobby – well actually i should say followed in my fathers footsteps.
Architectural Millwork
Or Carpentry for novices like me. I wanted to build some furniture for our new home that would have our unique signature on it. After pitching the idea to my very supportive wife we went to a second hand store called CashConverters looking for tools of the trade – a sander, a drill, mitre saw, compressor, router, nail gun, spray gun, and a skill saw or table saw. Lucky for us they had everything except a table saw which we ended up making ourselves.
Next we went and bought 4 sheets of wood from BuildersWarehouse along with sanding belts, nails, drill bits, screws, stain, steel wool, a file, wood glue, dowels, dust masks, protective glasses, clamps, etc…
Drew up our design measured the area and started cutting. Little by little over the next month we worked on the project enlisting the help of our neighbors not to mention numerous calls to my Dad for guidance. Its not complete yet but here is a sneak peek at what we have so far…
Its a bookcase for our family room that we will stain an Ebony color (if you look at the picture of the table saw it’s its stained two colors the one we chose it the one on the left the not-so-shiny side) to match our entertainment unit – very proud of what we have so far we’ll post pictures of the finished product hopefully very soon!
The next project is a crib for Khenzi, we already bought the mattress and have a design in mind so we’ll see what happens…
